چکیده

In this paper we present an environment for evaluating self-healing mechanisms in survivable networks. The work is based on the thesis that system level requirements of integrity and availability can be inherently conflicting, and that the type and level of defence in each particular network should be determined in relation to the particular network’s characteristics. The study shows that defined levels of critical service, intensity of attacks and time to recovery are important ingredients in measuring survivability. The paper presents a preliminary study of defence mechanisms in a telecommunication management network and illustrates how the network survivability is affected by several parameters such as network size, the implemented defence mechanisms, and the accepted trade-off against availability. The presented results are based on a model of the network built on top of the Swarm simulation platform and illustrate a potentially powerful tool in the hand of network security engineers. Keywords—Survivability, Simulation, Intrusion Tolerance, System Security, Security Metrics, Dependability

Time as a Metric for Defence in Survivable Networks

Critical infrastructures of today’s society are built over networks that require a degree of survivability not foreseen when they were built. This paper reports on work in progress in a European project that aims to safeguard critical infrastructures such as electricity and telecom networks. It assumes that there will be accidents, attacks, and failures in parts of a network. The goal of safegu...

Semiotics of Collective Memory of the Iran-Iraq War (Holy Defence): A Case Study of the Shared Images in Virtual Social Networks

This study aims to achieve a semiotic understanding of collective memory of the Iran-Iraq war. For this purpose, samples of images in virtual social networks shared in response to the news of discovery and return of the bodies of more than 175 divers have been analyzed. Visual signs in photographs, cartoons, graphic designs, prints, paintings and posters, in methods of historical pictures and f...

Survivable Traffic Grooming Research Report CSC 791b: Survivable Networks

Recent advances in optical communications have increased the bandwidth of individual wavelengths and the number of wavelengths carried per fiber by a substantial amount. The increase in traffic demands has however failed to keep pace with this phenomenon resulting in a number of sub-wavelength demands. These sub-wavelength demands need to be allocated one wavelength resulting in wastage of resi...

Metrics for the Evaluation of Proactive and Reactive Survivability∗

Current Byzantine-fault-tolerant survivable systems [5, 6] rely on strong theoretical properties to guarantee survivability. Evaluations of such systems generally focus on the performance overhead of the mechanisms in the fault-free case: a metric that, in itself, is not a good evaluator of survivability. This dearth of metrics makes the objective comparison of the survivability of different im...
